Manzanita Shrubs Information

What are Manzanita shrubs? It is great and beautiful twigs and branches of trees, although there are many different types of Manzanita around. It is a name used for a lot of species of the genus Arctostaphylos. Which are evergreen plants or small trees are come from the regions of North America but are common in New Mexico. You can also find Manzanita Mission Viejo and Manzanita Irvine in flower shop around those areas.

They look beautiful and have a variety of colors such as red, orange but have almost 106 different types. Cooler climates attract this type of plant especially on the mountains terrains. They can be found in the spring with small berries on them which are edible.

The word comes from Spain and means apple. Or sometimes referred to as a ‘little apple’, some uses for the berries are for teas and can be used for the rash commonly known as Poison oak. A great idea is to dry the berries or grind them. And they can be used to make a cider drink. People on long journey’s have been know to pick them up an eat them to hydrate, themselves. Some of the Native Americans used the branches as toothbrushes.

Some of the branches are used are ornamental plants and look amazing and don’t need a lot of watering because they have got accustomed to drought areas of the world. They have been known to grown on slopes and can hide on sightly areas of ground. And suddenly they become attractive once again.

The wood can’t really be used for timber because the grain can crack easily and is twisted but makes an attractive red color.

The branches can last for years and is know as driftwood, looking at times like animal bones. A lot of birds like parrots like to sit on this type of wood because it’s a nice clean type of wood.

Manzanita Mission Viejo and Manzanita Irvine can be used for firewood once it is dried out and is brilliant for camp fires, fireplaces or beach fires. It will burn a high temperatures fro a long time person. The wood burns at super high temperatures and may cause problems if not watched.

It’s an amazing type of twig or branch and will be commonly seen in florists and floral shops. You may even have some in your home and not know its name is Manzanita.
